Apple is expanding its public beta program this summer to include a new device: AirPods. Starting in July 2025, it will be possible to discover the upcoming features of the brand's wireless earbuds before anyone else. Provided you follow a few simple steps.
An update that greatly improves AirPods
The new firmware version, already available in beta for developers, concerns AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4. It brings several notable improvements, such as:
- Improved audio quality for calls and video conferences;
- A studio recording mode for podcasts or interviews;
- The ability to use AirPods as a remote shutter release in the iPhone camera;
- A sleep detection function, which automatically pauses playback if the user falls asleep.
Until now, these new features were reserved for developers. But for the first time, Apple is opening these tests to everyone via its Beta Software program, without a specific subscription.
How to access the AirPods public beta
Here's how to take advantage of this beta when it launches in July:
- Sign up for the free Apple Beta Software program with your Apple ID;
- Update your iPhone to the public beta (not the developer beta) of iOS 26, available in the same program;
- Connect your AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods 4 to your iPhone;
- Keep them nearby, connected, and charged: the firmware update will happen automatically, in the background.
Apple doesn't offer a button to force the installation: as with all AirPods updates, the deployment will be silent. A little more patience, then.
