The first update to Android 16 doesn't just bring visual changes. A new security feature has been quietly added to the mix. It could turn your phone into a digital safe.
Android is constantly evolving, both aesthetically and functionally. The latest major version of the system, Android 16, recently received a first update in beta. It introduces a new, more fluid interface style, called Material 3 Expressive, which gives a more rounded and modular look to menus, icons, and display options. The multitasking display has been reworked, notifications are more readable, and quick settings become more customizable. The system aims to be both more modern and more intuitive in its navigation.
But this update is not limited to a simple graphical facelift. Android 16 QPR1 also adds an advanced security feature called Advanced Protection. Tested by Android Authority, it is accessible from the settings. This option allows you to activate several settings designed to secure the smartphone against the most common threats in a single tap. This new feature is compatible with Pixel models from the 6 to the 9a, as part of the beta program.
Android 16's Advanced Protection mode blocks questionable apps, unsecured networks, and USB transfers
Advanced Protection mode combines several security tools that are already known but rarely activated together. Once launched, it prevents the installation of external applications, even via an APK file, which limits the risks associated with sideloading. Web browsing is also becoming more rigid: Chrome requires the HTTPS protocol for all pages visited and disables JavaScript to prevent malicious scripts often used to steal data or inject ads. These protections are applied automatically, without the need for manual configuration.
Other functions complete this shielding. The phone blocks all connections deemed unsafe, such as public Wi-Fi networks, WEP protocols, or 2G connections. The latter remains accessible only for emergency calls. File transfers via USB are disabled to prevent unauthorized access to data. At the same time, unwanted calls and fraudulent messages are more strictly filtered in the Phone app and Google Messages. Once enabled, it's impossible to disable each feature individually. Everything is applied automatically to ensure maximum protection, without compromise.
