While the video format has struggled to develop on Facebook since its launch, particularly compared to other social networks like TikTok or Instagram, Meta intends to remedy this with a new update.
Indeed, for several months now, the social network has been trying as best it can to reconcile with Generation Z with new features and by reviewing several parts of its interface.
And while until now Facebook had focused on relationships, such as the redesign of the "Friends" tab last March, Meta now seems to be interested in videos...
All videos on Facebook become Reels
In its Tuesday announcement on the Facebook blog, the social network affirmed its decision to impose the vertical format of Reels for all future videos in the coming months, completely abandoning the traditional horizontal format.
In return, Facebook announced on Reels will not have a limited duration, whereas currently this format is more favored for very short videos. By making this change, Facebook intends to facilitate video sharing, especially from smartphones.
Easier to use creative tools
To encourage Facebook users to share videos on the social network, the content editing tools should be completely overhauled.
In this next version, directly from the Facebook application, it will be possible to edit videos, add visual effects, music, or other options like noise reduction.
The “Videos” tab is transformed into “Reels”
Reels should not only be imposed on the content of the videos, but also on the name of the format on the social network. After completely revamping the "Videos" tab last year to accommodate all video formats, including Reels thanks to full-screen mode, Facebook seems to want to go even further.
From now on, users will no longer see a "Videos" tab on the social network, but rather a "Reels" tab that should highlight recommendations of varying length depending on your profile.
While this decision may seem trivial on the part of the social network, it is actually very well thought out. With Facebook having been heavily criticized for several years for seeing the average age of its users age at a rapid pace, to the detriment of other competing social networks, this is one of the ways for it to adopt the codes of the younger generations.
