Forza Horizon 5 puts Assassin's Creed Shadows in gear on PS5

Forza Horizon 5 puts Assassin's Creed Shadows in gear on PS5

Available since the end of April on PS5, Forza Horizon 5 is now one of the many Xbox franchises to have freed itself from the limits of exclusivity. Taking part in a vast plan to open up to other platforms on the part of Microsoft, the title from Playground Games has since been warmly welcomed by PlayStation players, many of whom responded to the launch. This success was then further confirmed during the month of May, where it finally surpassed another major title of this beginning of 2025: Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Forza Horizon 5 is a hit on PS5

Indeed, according to data shared by the media Alinea Analytics, Forza Horizon 5 is nothing less than the best-selling game on PS5 throughout last month. From second place in April, where it was sitting behind Minecraft, it has now risen to first place in the rankings with no fewer than 1.3 million games sold. In total, 2.2 million copies of Forza Horizon 5 have been sold on Sony's console since its release, for more than $100 million earned by Xbox.

As proof of the performance this represents, the Playground Games title has already surpassed the results recorded by Assassin's Creed Shadows since its launch last March. Because while Ubisoft's title, which generally makes its money on PlayStation, has apparently had a good start, it now appears that it has been tending to plateau for several weeks. Result: Forza Horizon 5 finally overtook it around May 15th, with the latest Assassin's Creed peaking at around 1.8 million copies sold.

Moreover, according to data shared by Alinea Analytics, Assassin's Creed Shadows actually continued to plummet in PS5 sales. Because while it had apparently managed to maintain its fifth place in the best-selling category in April, it simply disappeared from the top 10 for the month of May. But it must also be said that the latter was marked by the success of many other games, such as Elden Ring Nightreign and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which respectively reached second and fourth place in the ranking.

A winning strategy for Xbox

For Xbox, we can therefore say that the strategy of bringing its major exclusives to PS5 is proving rather profitable. This is particularly true of Forza Horizon 5, which is currently Microsoft's best-received PlayStation title to date. Obviously, that won't always work either. This is evident in DOOM: The Dark Ages, which, despite a May 15 release, seems to be struggling to find an audience on PS5, with only 270,000 sales. Players have undoubtedly favored Xbox Game Pass in this case.
