To make a film, you need actors and technicians. But there are also a multitude of artists behind it, starting with the composers for the soundtracks and also illustrators, some of whom have become legends. This is the case with this movie poster artist: Drew Struzan, to whom we owe magnificent movie posters that are bordering on masterpieces. Unfortunately, we have just learned that the artist has been affected by the disease.
Drew Struzan, the artist with 150 cult film posters
You may not know his name, but you certainly know his work. And for good reason: Drew Struzan is an American film poster artist who created cult film posters. He is the creator of the posters for Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Back to the Future, The Goonies, The Thing, Blade Runner and of course the Star Wars saga. The artist designed the posters for the special editions of the original trilogy and then the posters for the prequels. In 2013, Disney called on him again for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and he came out of retirement for the poster for How to Train Your Dragon 3.
Drew Struzan is not just a simple poster designer, he is a true artist who offers moviegoers visual emotions using acrylic paints that he projects with an airbrush and perfects the details with colored pencils. The result is posters that enhance feature films. His style became essential for marketing Hollywood films in the 1980s and 1990s.
Drew Struzan No Longer Remembers His Posters
Unfortunately, today the artist is no longer able to paint because his wife, Dylan, shared on Facebook that her husband has Alzheimer's disease and is fighting for his life. Drew Struzan can no longer work, sign, or even remember the posters he created. His wife explains:
The loss of coordination to transmit information from the brain to functional expression compromises his abilities (...) Drew has left a strong legacy of love and joy through his work.
His wife adds that the messages of support from fans keep him smiling. In addition to his more than 150 movie posters, Drew Struzan has also contributed to album covers for Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath. We invite you to see or re-see his most iconic movie posters below.
