Since yesterday, Friday, June 6, owners of iPhone 15 and iPhone 16—all models, including the iPhone 16E—can activate Orange's 5G+ in their phone's settings. Obviously, you must be a subscriber to the incumbent operator to benefit from it. Otherwise, this access is free; there's nothing extra to pay.
Higher speeds, lower latency
5G+ truly exploits the heart of the network. While 5G as we know it relies partly on 4G infrastructure, such as the 700MHz frequency band, 5G+, or "5G standalone," relies solely on the 3.5GHz frequency band. Speeds are higher, latency is lower. Orange explains that iPhone users will be able to benefit from a much better experience for demanding uses in terms of network response, such as online gaming or augmented reality. Network latency is improved by 3ms compared to 5G.
The operator, which hardly places emphasis on speeds, adds VoNR ("Voice over New Radio") to the mix, which allows voice to be transmitted over 5G to ensure consistent call quality while downloading a film. An uncommon use case, it must be admitted, but anything that can improve phone calls is a good thing. Finally, there's better security thanks to end-to-end encryption of SIM card identification—which should prevent identity theft.
Special Series 180GB 5G+ subscribers also get dedicated bandwidth, meaning optimal connection in tourist areas in summer and winter, or in certain busy places like during festivals. This plan costs €41 per month, and Orange adds Netflix with ads for 6 months, as well as a ChatGPT Plus subscription for 12 months. But you don't need this plan to get 5G+.
