For several weeks, many Android smartphone users have been complaining about their phone's battery life. The problem affects several smartphone brands, including Google Pixel, OnePlus, and Samsung. There's no shortage of stories on social media, such as Reddit.
Initially, users pointed the finger at the May 2025 security update, whose deployment coincided with the appearance of the first battery life bugs. Internet users quickly realized that the patch wasn't the culprit.
Google points the finger at Instagram
The drop in battery life is more likely due to the Instagram app's excessive consumption. On Reddit, a user reported, with a screenshot to prove it, that the social network drained more than 12% of the battery in just... 54 minutes. To find out for sure, some users installed previous versions of Instagram, or the Lite version. This strategy directly relieved the battery.
Faced with the accumulation of online testimonies, Google has finally spoken out. On the Android support site, the Mountain View giant revealed that the Instagram app is suffering from a glitch that increases its energy consumption. In fact, the app drains smartphone battery power much faster than usual.
Install the latest version of Instagram to fix the bug
Good news, Meta, Instagram's parent company, has noticed the bug. As Google explains, "Instagram is rolling out an app update that should resolve a battery drain issue on Android devices." By installing the new version of the app, you should resolve any potential battery drain issues on your phone.
To avoid overconsumption, make sure "you have the latest version of the Instagram app" on your smartphone, namely version 382.0.0.49.84. This is currently rolling out to the Google Play Store.
To check that the correct version is installed on your Android phone, long-press the Instagram icon, then tap "App info." The version number will then appear on the screen. If it is not the correct one, open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then go to the "Manage apps & device" section. You will see all available app updates, including Instagram's.
