While Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link has been officially canceled by Square Enix, one last vestige of the project lives on thanks to the community: its soundtrack. Since May 24, several musical excerpts from the beta version have been put online, much to the surprise of fans.
A soundtrack that resurfaces, despite the abandonment of the Kingdom Hearts project
The file, shared by user @KHWaterBlock on X (ex-Twitter), brings together most of the music heard during the testing phase of the game Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link. Available for free via MediaFire and Google Drive, this compilation had already been circulating discreetly for some time, but its public sharing quickly drew a reaction from the community.
Some fans even relayed the tracks on YouTube to allow more accessible listening, even if the soundtrack remains incomplete. The gesture was widely praised online, with both nostalgia and frustration at seeing the project abandoned.
A lauded musical work
Although the game has been canceled, the available excerpts demonstrate true artistic care. The music, faithful to the Kingdom Hearts atmosphere, mixes light orchestrations and more melancholic motifs. While it is still unknown whether Yoko Shimomura was directly involved, the musical legacy of the series is respected. Player feedback is unanimous: the soundtrack was one of the project's strong points, and its release at least allows us to preserve a trace of what Missing Link could have been.
As a reminder, Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link was supposed to be a mobile game with mechanics inspired by Pokémon GO, but with an important role for storytelling. Its role? To serve as a link between the final events of Union χ and the upcoming arrival of Kingdom Hearts 4.
But after several postponements and laborious development, Square Enix threw in the towel. The studio explains that it had failed to design a lasting and engaging experience. The cancellation is therefore final, and raises a question: what will become of the planned storyline?
