The Louisiana House of Representatives has passed a bill to ban "chemtrails." The white trails visible behind airplanes are actually harmless contrails. The bill claims, however, that government agencies are using chemicals to control the weather, or worse, minds.
Conspiracy theories become law
The bill's rapporteur, Republican Kimberly Landy Coates, is convinced that "chemtrails" allow mysterious agencies to conduct experiments to change the weather. "This bill is about preventing any presence of chemicals above our heads in the air," she says.
The bill directs the state Department of Environmental Quality to track reports of these "chemtrails" and forward complaints to the Air National Guard. A documentation phase has begun, but for the moment there are no sanctions, unlike a previous version of the text.
The law still has to go through the Louisiana Senate, which can approve it, reject it, or propose amendments. Since the institution has a Republican majority, the text has every chance of passing as is.
The example comes from above: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Donald Trump's current Secretary of Health and a notorious anti-vaccine activist, assured in August 2024 that he would put a stop to the "crime" of "chemtrails." Mark Shanahan, a professor of American politics at the University of Surrey (UK), complained to Newsweek that "wild ideas, without any basis, are being put forward and debated as if they were true" and that "Donald Trump [had] encouraged and facilitated this delusional circus."
