For eleven years, Nintendo players have been racing each other on the same game. But this time, it's finally here! A new chapter has been turned thanks to the Nintendo Switch 2. Its launch on June 5th was accompanied by the release of Mario Kart World, the new representative of the famous franchise that was a hit on previous consoles. However, certain points have raised eyebrows among fans, between good hope and sad realization.
Mario Kart World could still have something under the hood
When discovering Mario Kart World on Nintendo Switch 2, the feeling of grandeur is immediately felt. The vast world that opens up to us considerably reshuffles the cards compared to previous experiences with the franchise. However, we were able to feel some gaps in the game's content itself. But, this could only be short-lived.
In fact, Mario Kart World is facing several controversies, including some surprising absences. After having had the opportunity to play MK8 Deluxe for so long on the previous Switch, some features seemed basic to us. However, they are not available from the start for this new opus.
But our colleague Christopher Cruz from Rolling Stone had the opportunity to speak with Kosuke Yabuki, the producer of Mario Kart World. He asked him in particular about the absence of the 200cc mode for high-speed races. However, the response he gets might suggest that it's too early to know more, but that a future update is likely:
Some players are very happy with the addition of high difficulty modes like this one[the 200cc, editor's note]Does this mean we'll consider adding engines over 150cc to Mario Kart World? I'm afraid I can't say for now.
Kosuke Yabuki, for Rolling Stone.
Une page qui se tourne chez Nintendo
A second detail has raised some questions among Nintendo fans. When you complete each Mario Kart World Grand Prix, you gain access to the game's credits. However, some iconic names are missing. First, the actress who had voiced Peach for almost 20 years learned just before the game's release that she had been replaced in this installment. Samantha Kelly's name is therefore not in the credits. On her networks, she shared her emotion and her love for the character despite this sad news:
Even more striking, the absence of Shigeru Miyamoto in the Mario Kart World credits is a blow to fans. No one expected that the father of Mario and Donkey Kong, but also the co-creator of a host of the brand's iconic licenses, such as Zelda, Star Fox, and Pikmin, would not appear in the credits.
It's a page that is slowly turning for Nintendo. Miyamoto is not yet retiring, but as he made clear in June 2024, he is slowly stepping back from game design. From now on, he wants to dedicate himself to other projects for his company, such as film production. The release of Mario Kart World is therefore a first visible step in this new dynamic.
