PlayStation could buy absolutely cult and beloved franchises

PlayStation could buy absolutely cult and beloved franchises

As we know, the world of video games is punctuated by acquisitions and resales. This time, it's PlayStation that could take action, with a deal capable of lastingly changing the video game landscape. So, what do we know exactly? And who would be the target of this possible acquisition? We explain everything.

PlayStation about to make a big acquisition?

What if PlayStation was about to make a big splash in the entertainment world? According to an increasingly persistent rumor, the Japanese group is considering buying the "Streaming & Studios" branch of Warner Bros. Discovery. A strategic move that, if confirmed, could shake up the landscape of cinema, series... and even video games.

It all starts with a recent announcement. Warner Bros. Discovery plans to split into two separate entities by mid-2026. The first, “WBD Global Networks,” will focus on traditional channels, with sports, news, and linear entertainment. The second, “WBD Streaming and Studios,” will bring together HBO content, film studios, and... the video game division. Behind this reorganization, several analysts already see a clear intention: to prepare for the sale of the most profitable division, the one that brings together the company's most powerful licenses. And that's where PlayStation would come in.

A strategic acquisition for Sony

According to the site SEScoops, generally well-informed in the wrestling field but rarely cited in tech circles, Sony/PlayStation would be interested in this acquisition. And upon closer inspection, this rumor makes sense. With such a purchase, Sony would get its hands on huge franchises like Harry Potter, DC Comics, Game of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat. All these names would be capable of boosting the group's film, TV series, and video game divisions. It would also be a nice boost for PlayStation Productions, already engaged in adapting its own games into films and TV series.

Be careful not to get too excited, however. The split from Warner Bros. Discovery won't be effective until 2026, and there's no indication that an agreement is already underway. Even if negotiations begin soon, an official announcement wouldn't likely be expected before 2027 from PlayStation. And then, we must also consider the source: while SEScoops has sometimes hit the nail on the head in the wrestling world, it is not used to financial scoops. So, be careful.
