Sony will no longer produce its own high-end smartphones; subcontractors will take care of them

Xperia smartphones have never been able to stand out against the market leaders, despite the care taken in design and the prestigious Sony brand. Despite consumers' clear disinterest, the manufacturer is forging ahead and continuing to release new models - they have to sell, after all!

Sony is changing its production strategy

Sony launched the Xperia 1 VII at the beginning of May, a smartphone with a 6.5-inch OLED screen, a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, 12GB of RAM, a camera unit with 3 Zeiss sensors (including a 48MP wide-angle), a DAC, and a 5000mAh battery. The device runs on Android 15 and will benefit from 4 Android updates.

This model doesn't seem to be without merit, its only big problem ultimately being its price: it starts at €1,499, which places it at the level of the most expensive and most advanced smartphones on the market. A difficult proposition to swallow when Sony is a distant challenger behind Samsung or Apple.

This could change, however. According to Japanese media reports reported by GSM Arena, Sony will have its high-end smartphones assembled by subcontractors. Like Apple for its iPhones, built at Foxconn. This is not a first for the Japanese manufacturer, since it has already had its mid-range smartphones built this way for a while.

Production of the Xperia 1 range was until now handled by Sony sites based in Thailand and China. The name of the lucky one in charge of this outsourced production, which started with the Xperia 1 VII, is unknown. Unfortunately, it had no impact on its price!
