Switch 2 hacked just one day after its release? Yes, but there's a subtle twist.

An internet user managed to hack Nintendo's Switch 2, released on June 5, 2025. It took him less than 24 hours after the console hit shelves to find an exploitable flaw.

Switch 2 hacked just one day after its release? Yes, but there's a subtle twist.

It's been 5 days since the Nintendo Switch 2 was released. Some of you took the opportunity to finish Mario Kart World Tour 100% before moving on to The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom in 4K 60 fps. Meanwhile, others are also playing with their Switch 2, but with a less avowable goal: to hack it. As you know, each new console release marks the start of a race between hackers and the manufacturer.

The former are looking for the slightest flaw in the device, the latter wants to prevent them by patching them preemptively, or at least as quickly as possible. As for the Switch 2, we know who's in the lead at the moment. David Buchanan, who goes by the handle @retr0.id on the social network Blue Sky, found a Return-Oriented Programming (ROP) exploit less than 24 hours after the Switch 2's release. What exactly is it?

Someone has already hacked the Switch 2, but not to do what you have in mind

In short, it involves manipulating a program so that it executes code that it is not supposed to. You can see the result in the video below: Buchanan managed to display a checkerboard animation in the upper right corner of the Switch 2. In fact, nothing more happens.

So this is not a complete hack of the console. There is no question (yet) of installing a modified operating system, what is called Homebrew, and even less of running games without purchasing them.

The internet user only wants to show that the Switch 2 is like other consoles: it has loopholes that can be exploited. Nintendo is not fooled. The Japanese company knows perfectly well that it will have to redouble its efforts to prevent complete illegal access to its platform. Expect to need to update your console often in the coming months.

userland ROP on day 1 💪
