We're no longer sure which way to turn regarding The Last of Us 3. Statements from the boss of Naughty Dog, who is also the father of the franchise, change depending on which way the wind is blowing. So who can we turn to for new information? Perhaps the person who collaborates with Neil Druckmann on the adaptation of the cult games into a series, namely Craig Mazin. The showrunner has reportedly had some hints about a Part III, but don't get too ahead of himself.
Craig Mazin in the know about The Last of Us 3?
The curtain has fallen on season 2 of the TLOU series. Already renewed for a third with the potential for a final one to complete the adaptation of The Last of Us 2, it's clear that the franchise isn't about to leave our screens. That said, will we have the opportunity to play it again? That's been the question since the sequel's release in 2020.
It's now common knowledge that Naughty Dog is working on at least two projects at the same time. On the one hand, there's Intergalactic The Heretic Prophet, made official at The Game Awards 2024. On the other, there's a production still shrouded in mystery. But some elements would suggest a new Uncharted rather than The Last of Us 3.
So there's still a lot of uncertainty surrounding this third episode. However, the project is reportedly under discussion, and Neil Druckmann is reportedly actively considering concepts for The Last of Us 3. At least, that's what Craig Mazin claims when interviewed by the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). He's reportedly heard of some ideas for a potential third installment, but doesn't know where the thinking stands to date:
I'm aware of some concepts that Neil[Druckmann, editor's note] has considered for a possible third game. I don't know if he's settled on any of them.
Craig Mazin, for the BAFTAs.
As a fan of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin wouldn't say no to a The Last of Us 3. However, he encourages us to put things into perspective so as not to get our hopes up too much and risk disappointment. If the franchise doesn't see a new installment come to fruition, he says: "Don't be sad that it's over, be happy that it happened!" Even with regard to his adaptation work for HBO, he has already dodged the issue. In a previous interview, he stated that he would not contribute to the series beyond the storyline borrowed from TLOU2.
