The Outer Worlds 2, the promising RPG, shows us its crazy gameplay

Like previous editions, an intense Xbox Showcase 2025 as part of Summer Game Fest treated us to a more in-depth presentation of one of its biggest upcoming games. After Starfield in 2023 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in 2024, this time it's time for The Outer Worlds 2, the next title from the talented Obsidian studio, which looks particularly promising in many ways.

The Outer Worlds 2 brings the Xbox Showcase 2025 to a beautiful close

Six years after a solid first The Outer Worlds and four months after a pleasant but improvable Avowed, Obsidian was eagerly awaited for its next major title, The Outer Worlds 2. This new space license, somewhere between Fallout and Borderlands, had made an impression on its audience with its caustic humor, colorful artistic direction, and convincing writing that Obsidian has the secret to. The first opus, however, suffered from somewhat tame gameplay, despite some very wacky weapons and interesting mechanics for character development.

The Outer Worlds 2 is therefore an opportunity for Obsidian to strengthen the formula of the first opus at all levels. And what we can see in this long presentation of around thirty minutes closing the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 seems to be a very promising step in this direction.

A new RPG that bears the Obsidian brand

After laying the foundations of its new universe with the first opus, Obsidian seems to have pulled out all the stops on The Outer Worlds 2, having more time and budget to achieve its ambitions. This has allowed the studio to push the envelope further in terms of storytelling, artistic direction, but especially in terms of more dynamic and edgy gameplay. In this regard, we find the great freedom of the studio's previous games, with the possibility of managing numerous situations through weapons, or through dialogue, and several options in between.

This takes the form of a wide range of traits and flaws to grant to your character and to gain based on your experiences throughout the game, to offer even more ways to approach the same situation from several angles. It will therefore be more possible than ever in The Outer Worlds 2 to truly create your own character and your own adventure, at the controls of a member of the Earth Directorate, a sort of space Marshall. Similarly, the equipment possibilities are becoming even denser, in order to better fit different builds. We were treated to the presentation of numerous weapons with crazy concepts, capable of altering gravity, or even the size of our opponents.

As in the first opus, The Outer Worlds 2 will also allow us to set off on an adventure with six companions, who also have their own talents that we can develop as we progress. Finally, as is the case with Obsidian, choices will be of capital importance, both for the development of our character and our companions and for the story, with major repercussions of our decisions on the world around us.

A universe that is still as colorful and offbeat

In addition to offering significantly expanded gameplay compared to the foundations of the first opus, The Outer Worlds 2 also intends to go even further to densify its futuristic universe dominated by whimsical megacorporations. The universe of the license is therefore expanding with a host of new planets to visit, all in immense zones, thus giving pride of place to the freedom of players to explore all of this.

The whole thing is particularly dazzling to the eye thanks to Unreal Engine 5, which had already shone on Avowed, and which here allows to give even more substance to the atmosphere specific to The Outer Worlds 2. On paper, this sequel therefore looks particularly promising. Better still, we won't have to wait particularly long to discover it, since it will be released this October 29 on PC, Xbox Series, Game Pass, but also PS5!
