The PS6 is officially back in the news and it's very promising

In just a few months, the PS5 will officially celebrate its fifth anniversary. Slowly but surely, this means we are already approaching the end of the console's life cycle, which lasts on average seven or eight years. Inevitably, gamers are starting to wonder about the future of PlayStation, which was precisely addressed by its CEO, Hideaki Nishino, during a business meeting held last week. He took the opportunity to discuss the PS6, particularly from the perspective of the cloud.

PlayStation addresses the question of the cloud on PS6

Indeed, at a time when cloud gaming is increasingly becoming a mainstream phenomenon in the video game industry, many gamers are wondering if the PS6 could be led to invest even more in this technology. After all, the PS5 did get the PlayStation Portal, an accessory specifically designed for it. But for Nishino, this probably won't be the case. And this is mainly due to one reason: "The cloud is progressing well from a technical point of view, [...] but in the end, the stability of the network is not under our control," he laments. He then adds: "Cloud gaming increasingly offers an additional option for players to access content, but we believe that the majority of players want to continue playing through local execution, without depending on network conditions. And the PS5 and the PS5 Pro have validated this thesis." In fact, gamers with poor connections can rest assured: while the PS6 should indeed continue investing in the cloud, this will by no means become a major positioning for PlayStation. However, given the current evolution of trends, it's rather promising.

The next-gen, a priority for Sony

On the other hand, as Nishino pointed out during this exchange, we will have to be patient a little longer before learning more about Sony's next generation. Because if the PS6 remains "at the center of concerns" for the Japanese manufacturer, it is still far too early to reveal more about it. "We are committed to exploring a new and better way for players to enjoy our content and services," the PlayStation boss assures, however.

It remains to be seen what this will actually mean, which might not happen until 2028 at the earliest if we are to believe the documents revealed during the trial related to Microsoft's acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. Unless the manufacturer finally decides to surprise us by accompanying its PS6 with a new portable console, as some rumors have suggested in recent months. As always, you know the saying: only time will tell.
