After The Witcher 3, CD Projekt RED made it clear that its next game in the franchise would no longer place Geralt in the lead role. The Witcher 4 was indeed supposed to mark the beginning of a whole new saga in the dark fantasy universe inspired by the writings of Andrzej Sapkowski. It took until the Game Awards 2024 to discover that it was Ciri who would take up the Witcher's Way. A choice welcomed by some, surprising to others, and the subject of controversy for the rest. Many criticized the Polish studio for choosing a woman as the main protagonist, and that she was moreover "ugly" compared to her representation in the third installment.

CD Projekt RED had also clarified the situation regarding the Ciri model used in the announcement trailer and the recent technical demo of The Witcher 4, indicating that it is an adaptation on Unreal Engine 5 of the one from the previous episode. Some fans, however, have argued that Ciri has no place in the game's main role, especially not as a witcher, even though, according to them, there are no mutated women. The original author of the novels recently defended CD Projekt RED's choice for the main character of The Witcher 4 at an event in Poland.

"Some fans think they know the books better than I do. Mutations? I never wrote that a woman can't undergo them. Just that the Trial of the Herbs would be harder, because it's already highly lethal for boys or men." Andrzej Sapkowski joins Doug Cockle, the English voice of Geralt, in defending the choice of Ciri in the lead role of The Witcher 4. After the first announcement, he had in fact declared, more directly: "if you think it's woke, read the damn books."
