Google is testing a new design for the search bar on Pixel smartphones. More modern, it features a new AI button... but users are annoyed by one specific detail.

Google continues to adjust the details of its interface with Android 16, already available on Pixel smartphones. After more visible new features like smart notification grouping and new tablet multitasking, the company is tackling a discreet but omnipresent element: the search bar of the Pixel Launcher. For several years, it has provided access to search, Google Lens, and voice dictation. With the latest beta of the system, a new AI shortcut has been added. But this development is not unanimously welcomed.

The “AI Mode” shortcut is installed in a circular bubble to the right of the bar, now integrated into a large pill-shaped box. This interface is very reminiscent of the search widget in the Google app, which was recently redesigned. At first glance, the whole thing appears more consistent with the rest of the system. But unlike the widget, Pixel Launcher users can neither change the shortcut to another one (such as weather or translation), nor delete it. This lack of customization is one of the most common complaints, as noted by Android Authority and several discussions on Reddit.

The Pixel Launcher adopts a new search bar with an AI button… but without customization options

This change is currently only visible in the Android 16 QPR1 beta, and its rollout seems to be gradual. Some users have spotted it on Reddit and Telegram, although not all affected devices are affected yet. At this point, the new design only applies to the home screen. The search bar in the app drawer retains its classic appearance, resulting in a still incomplete visual. Google could still make adjustments before the release of the stable version, expected in September.

For many users, the real problem remains the inability to modify this bar according to their needs. It's impossible to add a useful shortcut, remove one, or even disable the new AI button. Many alternative launchers allow these kinds of adjustments. In comparison, Google gives the impression of forcing a rigid solution, which annoys those who want more control over their smartphone.
