Launched in 2014, the series True Detectiveis undoubtedly one of HBO's most prestigious shows. Good news, as its creator has made an announcement that will delight fans of season 1.
Is the iconic duo soon to return?
In January 2014, the legendary cable channel HBO launched one of the most notable series of the 2010s. Created by screenwriter Nic Pizzolatto, True Detectivestunned critics and audiences alike, receiving rave reviews. In Louisiana, two police officers investigate a difficult case of prostitute murders that could be linked to ancient Bayou rites. An investigation that will reveal the extent of corruption in one of the poorest states in the United States, and that will change them as men.
What made True Detective such a success upon its release was a combination of factors. First of all, Nic Pizzolatto has written a meticulous script, combining political and philosophical questions across three timelines, and drawing inspiration from the work of Robert Chambers (The King in Yellow), Thomas Ligotti (The Conspiracy Against the Human Race) and neo-noir. We must also mention the breathtaking direction of Cary Joji Fukunaga, who directs the entire season and allows himself some truly daring moments, such as the seven-minute sequence shot concluding episode 4. Finally, the cast, led by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey - then on the rise - completes the picture of one of the greatest series in history. src="https://static.hitek.fr/img/up_s/2158817758/a2545_e4e5c7e4a3f393a13009fbdd9fecafefad5a802e438e8ecac9928cf7dbe29567.sx1080fmjpg.webp">
Unfortunately, after a unanimously acclaimed first season, True Detective failed to repeat its resounding success. Season 2 was unfairly shunned, and season 3 managed to garner positive reviews, but far removed from the triumph of the first. Finally, season 4, released in 2024 and directed by screenwriter Issa López, met with indifference, despite a very positive critical reception. Is the True Detective series destined to move further and further away from the public's concerns? It seems that Nic Pizzolatto has found the perfect solution to make his show an event again!
During an interview with the podcast Nothing Left Unsaid, the showrunner spoke about the seriesTrue Detective: "I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we'll do it one day," said Pizzolatto. "It's character-driven again… But it's not something I wrote or anything. It's just an idea that I had in my head. And we've talked about it, about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to the idea. It's just a question of whether it will ever come to fruition or not." The last sentence is obviously key, but if The main characters are ready to get back into their detective costumes, so fans can hope for their return to the world of True Detective.
We also remember that a newspaper article mentioned Inspectors Cohle and Hart in season 3 of True Detective. Proof, if any were needed, that the two characters have never left their creator's mind! Finally, note that Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey reprised their roles in a short video released in early 2025.
