If you follow Keanu Reeves' news, you know that a sequel project for the film Constantine directed by Francis Lawrence and released in 2005 is on track. While the announcement delighted fans of the now-cult film, this second installment seems to be stagnating due to reluctance on the part of its lead actor.
A sequel to Constantine on track
In 2005, Francis Lawrence directed Constantine with Keanu Reeves in the title role, a terminally ill occultist and exorcist. After attempting suicide in his youth, he is doomed to go to hell. During a mission to banish the demon from a child's body, he meets Angela Dodson, who is convinced that her sister, Isabel, did not commit suicide but was murdered. They will try to solve this mystery. Meanwhile, a miner in Mexico has gotten his hands on the Spear of Destiny and is heading to Los Angeles to free Satan's son, who will attempt to incarnate himself in Angela's body. Constantine will be tasked with preventing him. The project for a Constantine 2 has been announced, but it seems that everything is not going as planned because there is a disagreement between Keanu Reeves and Warner regarding the vision of the project.
Keanu Reeves and Warner have two different visions for Constantine 2
As Peter Stormare, who plays Lucifer in the film, explains in an interview for The Direct, the John Wick actor "is not very happy with the scripts or what the studios are proposing." Keanu Reeves "wants to make a sequel very close to the first one."
On the one hand, the studio wants to make Constantine 2 a blockbuster with spectacular effects and stunts. On the other, Reeves, Francis Lawrence, and Stormare want the same atmosphere and dimension as the first installment. Peter Stormare adds that this sequel must not "do Marvel."
In 2022, speaking to The Wrap, Francis Lawrence explained that he wanted to make Constantine 2 a R-rated film while remaining faithful to the first installment. But it's clear that the two parties do not have the same vision at all. Everything seems to suggest that this blockage could delay the release of this sequel.
For now, no definitive script has been proposed. Only a few versions have been submitted without the approval of the actors and the director. Constantine 2 is still officially in development but we are far from the start of filming and even further from a theatrical release.
