After five successful installments since its launch in 2003, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise seemed to be at a standstill. However, new clues suggest that a sixth film could soon see the light of day. Today, let's take stock of what we really know about this project.
Johnny Depp could return
For several years, the future of the saga remained unclear. Disney explored different alternatives. At the same time, Johnny Depp's departure following his legal troubles with Amber Heard complicated things. The studio seemed to want to turn the page by focusing on new faces.
But today, rumors are circulating that Johnny Depp is in advanced discussions with Disney to reprise the role of Jack Sparrow. According to Yahoo and other reliable media, these negotiations are very real, even if nothing has been signed yet.
For his part, Geoffrey Rush, aka the formidable Captain Barbossa, has expressed openness to a return. In an interview, he confided:
I thought it was over... but if Johnny comes back, why not?
Orlando Bloom, the actor who plays Will Turner, has also publicly expressed his interest in returning to the pirate universe.
The script is already written and approved
Furthermore, we know that a screenplay is already ready. Craig Mazin, creator of Chernobyl and The Last of Us, co-wrote a script with Ted Elliott, one of the franchise's long-time writers. In an interview, Mazin explained that Disney accepted their idea, even though it was off the beaten track:
We thought it was too weird, but they loved it.
Unfortunately, the writers' strike in 2023 froze development. The project remains pending a concrete restart.
Alternative projects were abandoned
Before reviving the original track, Disney tried to explore other directions.
The spin-off with Margot Robbie
This project was supposed to offer a new story centered on a woman. Margot Robbie confirmed this:
We were developing a different idea, more feminine. But they don't want it anymore.
Disney ultimately shelved this film, likely due to the actress's busy schedule and the success of Barbie.
Another version with Karen Gillan
Rumors suggested Karen Gillan (Jumanji, Guardians of the Galaxy) would play a role inspired by Redd, the cult character from the Disney attraction. But again, no sequel was made. The idea also seems to have been abandoned.
Given these cancellations, we can assume that Disney seems to want to return to what made the franchise successful: Jack Sparrow, the old heroes, the maritime adventure, and the supernatural folklore.
Especially since the fifth film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, left a mystery hanging. The post-credits scene hinted at the return of Davy Jones, the mythical enemy. And the reunion of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann opened the door to new family intrigues.
In short, everything is in place to make way for a direct sequel to the previous films.
