Despite the controversies, Twitch records a record year

24 billion. That's the number of hours of video watched by Twitch viewers in 2021. A dizzying figure, and for good reason: the platform recorded an 45% increase in audience compared to the previous year.

According to Rainmaker.gg and StreamElements, 2021 was a successful year for the Amazon subsidiary. Despite a smaller increase than Facebook Gaming, which recorded a 47% increase over the year with now 5 billion hours on the counter, Twitch therefore remains the only master on board on the live streaming market.

Video games are still top 1

Initially known for its video game streams, Twitch has since diversified considerably, and offers both ASMR and a special category “Swimming Pools and Jacuzzis”. However, the site remains very popular with video game fans. The title GTA V also wins the prize for the most popular license, with 2.1 billion hours of cumulative viewing alone, an increase of 175% compared to last year. Next comes League of Legends. In addition to having invaded Netflix with the excellent Arcane series this year, Riot Games' MOBA has accumulated 1.8 million hours watched, and an increase of 28.5%.

At the bottom of the podium, it is Fortnite which brings up the rear, with 1 billion hours watched and a 10.6% increase over the year. Epic Games' Battle Royale has notably been able to count this year on several live concerts organized, and increasingly epic partnerships, such as recently with Spider-Man No Way Home.

Despite controversies, Twitch is doing well

So it's a good year that ends for Twitch. However, the platform has not only had good news in 2021. We remember in particular the massive leak that occurred in October, which in addition to revealing several confidential pieces of information, such as the salaries of influencers or a secret project that the company was working on, also highlighted major security flaws. In November, we learned that the firm had - despite itself - allowed scammers to launder more than eight million euros, but also that it kept a list of streamers “to not ban”. Clearly not enough to tarnish his reputation with the general public.
