Flex Gaming: Samsung invents the “folding switch”

In the aisles of the Mobile World Congress, the Samsung Display booth is usually a must-see. The 2025 edition is no exception and allows you to discover tomorrow's trends in screens... and portable consoles. With its bright colors, the Flex Gaming does not go unnoticed and quickly attracts attention with its innovative concept. This portable console opts for a Switch format and integrates a folding screen.

We'll have to make do with that since Samsung hasn't been very talkative about its strange machine. The meager official information mentions the presence of a 7.2-inch foldable OLED panel. We were able to get up close – but not try – the Flex Gaming and see that the project is well advanced. The portable console integrates numerous buttons, asymmetrical joysticks and even a microSD card slot. There is also a USB-C port to power this console. It's hard not to make the connection with the Nintendo Switch, and the future Switch 2, but the hinge makes a real difference.

A folding console, a false good idea?

In use, we can already imagine the interest of being able to make your console even more transportable once folded. We should also not exclude the possibility of seeing a hybrid concept arrive, mixing a portable console and a smartphone. However, the constraints linked to folding devices are numerous and imply a rearrangement of the components. In particular, the battery must be split and there is a risk of losing reliability. Finally, the price could soar compared to a console equipped with a more traditional screen.

As it stands, there is no indication that Samsung plans to launch such a machine since the concept is the fruit of the imagination of its subsidiary dedicated to displays. Samsung Display regularly presents new ideas to convince its parent company and other partners to launch new formats. Alongside the Flex Gaming, we can also see a Steam Deck OLED and a Razer Blade 16 equipped with Samsung's OLED technology.

The presence of the Flex Gaming in Barcelona allows us to test the interest of the public and specialists. On this same stand, we can also see concepts of a screen that folds into three, an extendable screen or a case equipped with a flexible screen.
