A GameCube controller for Switch 2 is reportedly in development at Nintendo. This would indicate that Nintendo Switch Online should soon host GameCube games.
The Switch 2 continues to leave us wanting more. Nintendo has given us See you on April 2, 2025 for a more detailed presentation of the console, but players are having a hard time being patient. They are therefore turning to leaks to try to find out more about the device. And GameCube fans may well have been heard by Big N.
As spotted by users of the Famiboards forum, Nintendo has filed a certification application with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) for a game controller that appears to be a GameCube controller for the Switch 2. Its product code is indeed BEE-021, Nintendo using the BEE prefix for Switch 2 components and peripherals. According to the information mentioned, this is not a Switch 2 Pro Controller.
GameCube games for Nintendo Switch Online?
We learn that this device is indeed Bluetooth compatible, but that it does not support NFC, unlike the Joy-Con and the Switch Pro Controller. If a controller paying homage to the GameCube is indeed coming to Switch 2, we can hope that this means that the Nintendo Switch Online catalog will be populated of GameCube games with the release of the Switch 2. We don't see Nintendo marketing such an accessory for the hybrid console without providing access to the games of the time.
N64 and Mega Drive controllers are already available for the Switch, which was entitled to them with the launch of games from these consoles on Nintendo Switch Online. These controllers cost 49.99 euros, we can assume that the price will be similar for this GameCube controller. However, it is not impossible that the price of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription will increase with the release of the Switch 2 or the integration of GameCube games.
The Nintendo Switch 2 could be launched in June 2025, at a price much higher than that of the first generation. It's unclear whether the supposed GameCube controller and games will be available at launch or later.
