The Last of Us series hadn't appeared on our screens for two years. HBO took its time adapting Naughty Dog's second game of the same name, and it's this April that fans of the universe will be able to (re)discover the adventures of Ellie and Joel. Although we know little about this second chapter, we've known for several weeks how many episodes it will have.
It seems that we'll be entitled to 7 episodes this year, compared to 9 for the first season. This choice, which wasn't questioned by viewers, but one can legitimately ask the question: why was this choice made, and are the writers running out of things to tell? Nothing could be less certain.
From 9 to 7 episodes
Reducing a season by two episodes is not insignificant, especially when it originally had less than ten episodes. This is a change that will be noticeable over time since it cuts two weeks of broadcasting from the season 1 schedule. However, we should not expect a shorter season. Indeed, we don't yet know the length of each episode, but they should be denser in season 2.
A slew of new characters are arriving, so we'll have to take the time to introduce them and then include them in a narrative that promises to be much more complex than in season 1. Unlike the linear storyline we were treated to, The Last of Us Part II, which inspired the series, has two distinct points of view, intertwined. It must therefore be taken into account that the back and forth between the different perspectives will take some time.
A longer story to tell
Furthermore, it should not be forgotten that if the second season is shorter, it is because it is the first of the potential 3 seasons in total dedicated to the second game in the franchise. As mentioned earlier, The Last of Us Part II is much more complex, and therefore has a longer lifespan than the first game. This narrative density will also be transcribed in the series, which will add a number of new sequences in addition to the events that players already know.
It is not yet known how the story of the second game in the series will be divided, and it would be tempting to believe that the same narrative structure will be adopted by Craig Mazin. However, we will have to wait until April 13th, at least, to be sure.
