The PS5 now exceeds the PS4 in the United States

It's now official, a little over four years after its launch, the PS5 has managed to surpass the sales of the PS4 over the same period in the United States. Behind this good news for Sony, there are still quite a few negatives surrounding console sales in the USA, which are still in free fall this month compared to the same period in 2024.

Analyst Mat Piscatella, who works for the Circana Institute, revealed the new console sales figures in the United States for the month of February 2025. Unfortunately, the figures are not very good with a drop of -25% compared to the figures for 2024. Console sales thus generated $256 million compared to $341 million the previous year at the same time.

But despite this, Sony and the PS5 remain in the lead. Better still, we learn that the PS5 is now ahead of the PS4 in terms of sales on American soil, with 7% more sales over the same period (52 months). This is therefore a very nice feat for PlayStation, which has managed to surpass the sales of its previous console in less than five years, despite more than a year and a half of stockouts and shortages. In total, the PS5 has peaked at 75 million copies since its release in November 2020. The PS4, for its part, peaks at 117.2 million units since its release in November 2013.

On the Microsoft and Xbox side, it's a little less of a party. Mat Piscatella confirms that the Xbox Series X/S are not selling very well with 19% fewer sales compared to the Xbox One over the same period (52 months). Since their release in November 2020, the Xbox Series X/S would peak at 32 million consoles sold, while the Xbox One has reached 57.9 million machines sold to date since November 2013.
