For several years, Netflix has been trying to invest and make a place for itself in the video game industry with its Netflix Games service. The idea is to offer Netflix subscribers a selection of games, on mobile, at no additional cost.

In the meantime, Netflix has wanted to get more serious with the creation of studios, which have already closed. Clearly, the streaming giant intends to specialize in partnerships by integrating major licenses into its catalog.

Furthermore, for Alain Tascan, the streaming service's new director of video games, the future of gaming will not involve game consoles.

The end of consoles according to Netflix

According to the boss of Netflix Games, the future of video games is not in a console

It was during a recent interview on the media The Game Business that Alain Tascan, the new director of video games at Netflix, discussed the industry and the future of gaming, making it clear that, for him, the future will not be consoles, but Cloud Gaming.

Although Netflix has experienced setbacks, particularly with its studios, its ambitions are still very high. Recently, a partnership with Rockstar Games allowed the integration of GTA The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition on the service, allowing it to achieve immense success.

For Netflix, the objective will be to continue this strategy by becoming a major player, by making video games as accessible as possible, with as few obstacles as possible. And for that, it involves Cloud Gaming and all of it materialized:

So of course, and even if this point of view is acceptable, it is good to remember that video games are not intended only for young people ready to play their games on mobiles in a car. Some hardcore players want to have the best conditions. And for Alain Tascan, this does not seem to be a priority:

Thus, the future of video games according to Netflix will therefore involve an innovative side of gameplay, like the Wii in its time, but on mobiles. The head of the Gaming department is considering features like the gyroscope, microphone, and touchscreen on phones to make mobile gaming more ambitious for the benefit of consoles.

Not sure this is really the best vision. As a reminder, the last people to announce that "the future of video games would not be on a console" were Google and Phil Harrison in 2019 for Stadia. Two years later, the service closed permanently after an unprecedented flop.
