Netflix subscribers hit hard: prices explode in France

It was almost expected, it's now official: Netflix is once again increasing the price of its subscriptions in France. Announced on the occasion of the publication of its solid quarterly results, this increase is effective immediately for new subscribers and will soon be reflected in the bills of existing customers.

Up to 33% increase!

As is becoming a habit for the streaming giant, all offers are seeing their monthly price increase:

  • Standard package with ads: it goes from 5.99 euros to 7.99 euros, an increase of 2 euros, representing a significant increase of 33%.
  • Standard package (without ads): it increases by 1.50 euros, going from 13.49 euros to 14.99 euros (+11%).
  • Premium package: it increases by 2 euros, settling at 21.99 euros instead of 19.99 euros (+10%).

Even the cost of adding an additional subscriber to the Standard and Premium offers is also adjusted. It now goes to 5.99 euros per month (if the additional subscriber accepts advertising) or 6.99 euros per month (without advertising).

Netflix subscribers hit hard: prices explode in France

This increase comes after a similar increase applied in the United States and other markets in late 2024 or early 2025. Netflix justifies this decision by the need “adjust offers and prices to improve monetization and thus encourage investment in future improvements to the service”.

With more than 300 million subscribers by the end of 2024 and financial results exceeding expectations (more than $10 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2025), Netflix is now prioritizing growth in revenue per subscriber and engagement, rather than simply acquiring new customers. The platform has also stopped disclosing the exact number of its subscribers. The company is counting heavily on its advertising-supported offering, launched at the end of 2022, to generate significant revenue.

A fundamental trend

This new increase confirms a trend observed for several years. Compared with the launch rates in France in 2014, the Standard subscription has increased by 66% and the Premium by 83% in ten years. The Standard offering with advertising even reaches the price of the historic basic offer, but with the addition of the advertising constraint.

Consumers should therefore expect streaming service prices to continue to rise, as expert Ross Benes points out, indicating that the sector is now focusing more on profitability per user. Current Netflix subscribers are invited to monitor your next bill to see the application of these new prices.
