While the Switch 2 presentation during the Nintendo Direct on April 2nd was quite convincing, there was still one notable absentee: Super Mario. Although we were treated to an announcement of the next Mario Kart, fans will still have to wait for a new Super Mario 3D, in favor of Donkey Kong Bananza which promises to be quite incredible.
During an interview with CNN, Nintendo President Doug Bowser seems to imply that the next new 3D Mario game will not be coming soon and that fans will have to wait.
Super Mario: no Switch 2 for the moment?
À To date, no fewer than 58 games have been announced for the Switch 2, including 21 that should be released for the console's launch on June 5. Among these titles, we find a majority of games from third-party publishers (CyberPunk 2077, Elden Ring, The Duskbloods, Borderland 4, etc.) and Nintendo games that are in decline, despite the announcements of Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Bananza and even Kirby Riders.
While many rumors announced the arrival of a new Mario 3D game for the end of the year, Nintendo CEO Doug Bowser calmed things down and confirmed that we will have to be patient. During an interview with CNN, the executive declared: "Stay tuned. You know, we have a long, very long catalog and a long list of licenses that I'm sure will end up on the platform.".
This statement seems to indicate that many licenses (like Super Mario, Yoshi, Luigi's Mansion or Wario Land for example) are indeed in development for an upcoming release on Switch 2, but that for the moment, there are games announced and the priority remains focused on them.
Donkey Kong Bananza, which will arrive on July 17th, seems to be a Mario Odyssey at Donkey Kong sauce, relatively close to a Mario 3D. It is certain that Nintendo will want to bet everything on this title, at least for this summer and the start of the school year.
As often, Nintendo has the habit of announcing games for the current year and announcing other titles for the end of the year. There is a good chance that a new Nintendo Direct dedicated to the Switch2 could arrive by the end of the year.
