Elisabeth Borne confirms the ban on mobile phones in all French middle schools from the start of the 2025 school year as part of the "digital break". how this will work for students.
It was an “absolute emergency” for the government. The ban on smartphones at The digital break at school and college, called the "digital break," featured prominently in the recommendations of the "screens" commission mandated by the President of the Republic last year. Tests were quickly implemented in 200 establishments, where students must leave their mobile phones at the entrance to the building or in a locker. The objective is to be able to generalize the measure by 2025, and it has been achieved.
Élisabeth Borne, Minister of National Education, confirmed this during a current affairs question session to the government: “I really hope that the digital break will be generalized to all middle schools at the start of the next school year. From September 2025, middle school students will no longer be allowed to use their mobile phones on school premises. The minister reports “very positive” feedback on experimentation, “notably on improving the school climate“.

In practice, each middle school will have to define the form this ban will take. We can imagine, for example, that students keep their devices on them, but turned off. Ideally, they will be stored “in lockers or pouches“. If necessary, the departmental councils, which manage the middle schools, will have to finance their implementation, without this being an obligation. Elisabeth Borne estimates the cost of such an operation at "a few thousand euros."

However, there will be exceptions to the rule. A student with a disability, or more generally suffering from a health condition requiring them to have a cell phone with them, will be able to keep it. Similarly, the devices may be used during lessons for educational purposes. It will take several months to see the effects of the measure, deemed "essential for the well-being and success of students."
