Switch 2: What is mouse mode really for?

Switch 2: What is mouse mode really for?

It hasn't been a surprise for several weeks now, but the Nintendo Switch 2 will have a whole new mode of use: the mouse. The Joy-Con, completely redesigned with magnetic attachments, will be able to attach to a small accessory that allows them to slide on a flat surface and switch from a classic controller to a computer mouse. Until the Nintendo Direct, we could only speculate about its purpose, but it's very clear today that Nintendo wants to make it one of its main marketing arguments.

Which games will be compatible?

Using mouse mode has been officialized for several games already. In the presentation, we could see that the game Drag x Drive was specifically designed for this use. It is a game inspired by disabled sports in which players embody a person in a wheelchair on a football field. Aside from this exception, the mouse mode will be compatible with classic games, which were not specifically developed to exploit it, but which will be just as relevant.

As predicted a few weeks ago, the mouse will be used for so-called point and click games, shooting games and even management games. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will indeed be playable with this feature, which will help players aim better and chain deaths.

Mario Party Jamboree will add exclusive mouse-based content in a paid update. Some mini-games will be optimized for this particular use, but it is not yet known how many will be added to the base title. As for management games, Civilization VII will also be compatible. Finally, even titles like Speed Golf can be played this way.

A self-sufficient or hybrid mode

The Joy-Con in mouse mode can be used by themselves, that is, with both controllers in this configuration, or they can be added to a more traditional use of the controller. This is the case for Metroid Prime 4 where we see the player with a controller in the left hand, and a mouse in the right hand. This use is rather revolutionary, since it provides a considerable alternative to the traditional keyboard/mouse that is mainly found on PC. It remains to We want to know if it's still comfortable to hold the controller and if it's a way of using it that will convince players.
