The Nintendo Switch has finally been formally announced. The publisher and manufacturer has shared many of the console's technical specifications, which will benefit from more storage and more powerful game cards. But will your old microSD cards be compatible with the device?
It's the big day! Nintendo has finally presented the Switch 2, revealing its technical specifications as well as the first games that will be available. This new generation brings some new features relating to the hybrid console's storage. First, the Switch 2 has 256GB of internal memory, which is eight times more than the 32GB of the original Switch. Expect some particularly large titles to be offered on the device.
Nintendo says the game cards are the same size as those of the first Switch. They are, however, recognizable by their red outline (versus black for the Switch 1) and the Switch 2 logo. They are also more efficient, with faster transfer rates than on older game cards. The publisher specifies that some Switch 1 games are backward compatible with Switch 2, without providing a precise list of the titles concerned for the moment.
Faster storage for the Switch 2
There are also changes for storage expansion. You may no longer be able to use your old microSD cards on the Switch 2, since it only supports microSD Express technology, which offers better performance than traditional mcroSD cards. You will therefore have to invest in a new external storage accessory if you are not equipped a microSD Express card.
Big N has announced that it will provide players with a system for transferring data from one console to another. This will allow you to easily recover your games, settings, and saves to your new Switch 2, without having to configure the console from scratch.
The Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025. Mario Kart World will be part of the launch lineup, which will offer an open world à la Forza Horizon in addition to traditional circuits.
