Like many messaging apps, WhatsApp emphasizes the security and privacy of its exchanges. Between ephemeral messages and chat locking, there are many tools already in place. The beta version 2.25.10.14 of WhatsApp for Android adds a new one: a feature called Advanced Chat Privacy, which can simply be translated as "advanced chat privacy".
According to information from WABetaInfo, this feature currently relies on two main pillars. One limits the export of conversations outside of WhatsApp. The other prevents automatic media saving.
Two additional doors...
Concretely, the user can prevent their interlocutors from exporting their conversation with them. As a reminder, the "Export discussion" function allows you to generate a file containing all messages, with or without attachments.
Furthermore, it is also possible to block the automatic saving of media (photos, videos) in the recipient's device gallery.
An indirect consequence of these settings: Meta AI, WhatsApp's integrated chatbot, becomes inoperable in protected discussions. It is likely that this defection is linked to the conversation history, which this assistant accesses—for consistency with the confidentiality settings.
…without locks
That said, this new layer remains largely circumventable. Nothing prevents a recipient from manually saving content that interests them, nor from forwarding the conversation to a secondary or disposable number, and then exporting it from there. Furthermore, screenshots are still possible.
In summary, the feature does not guarantee total privacy of exchanges. Let's just say that it makes the procedure a little more tedious for those who want to extract the complete history.
According to WABetaInfo, advanced confidentiality is regulated on a discussion-by-discussion basis, whether in a private message or in a group. The restrictions only apply to content sent by the user who activates the option. And as you can see, they apply to their contacts, regardless of their own settings.
Already being tested by some Android beta users, this feature remains under development. In addition to the fact that its details remain unclear, it is therefore likely to evolve before its possible public deployment. For now, no official timetable has been set. press release.
