WhatsApp hits back at Telegram and Signal with 12 new features

In order to remain ever more competitive against its rivals like Telegram or Signal, WhatsApp is adding new features.

While WhatsApp still seems to be well ahead of its competitors in terms of number of users, the latest announcements from Telegram, which is partnering with Grok, or from Signal with its new private chat mode are cause for concern.

As we can read in the announcement published on the messaging service's blog by Mark Zuckerberg, there are no fewer than 12 new features that should be found on WhatsApp.

Online Status

This new feature allows you to see who is currently online in a group chat, with a simple "Online" indicator.

Group Notifications

Group notifications allow you to choose who to notify when a new message is sent.

This allows further prioritization of notifications to put the most important ones at the forefront.

Individual Events

Events are now available not only in groups, but also in individual conversations.

This should allow guests to confirm their presence at a specific event, add another guest, and even specify a date for the end of the event.

Touch reactions

Directly inspired by other messaging services like Slack, WhatsApp will now allow you to use the same reactions as other members of a group by clicking on an emoji.

From the iOS application, WhatsApp now allows you to scan and send documents, without having to go through the of Apple's Notes app.

Default messaging

Users of the app on iOS will also be able to set WhatsApp as their default messaging app, instead of Apple's Messages app.

Zooms in videos

Video calls are also enhanced with a new zoom feature. From an iPhone, by "pinning" On the screen, you will be able to zoom in or out during video calls.

Adding guests to a call via chat

While it was previously impossible to add new people to individual video calls, this will now be possible thanks to the new "Add to call" button.

Improved video quality

To improve the video connection during calls, WhatsApp now automatically manages the quality of the video stream. When possible, WhatsApp will have the ability to broadcast HD video quality.

Video Updates

Updates are no longer limited to chats, but can also be made on videos with updates up to 60 seconds.

Voice Message Transcription

To allow users to view audio messages without listening to them, WhatsApp allows access to them via a written transcription.

QR Code Generation

Group admins will now be able to create unique QR codes, to share them anywhere online.
