The Google Maps navigation app continues to evolve quietly but effectively. A new layout makes it easier to read without obscuring the map. This change is part of a larger overhaul that began several months ago.

For several months, Google Maps has been receiving regular improvements that make the application more readable and more practical to use, especially in the car. Some recent updates have brought welcome additions, such as the direct display of the expected arrival time, tolls, or even the difficulty of parking at the destination. Google is also preparing the arrival of its Gemini artificial intelligence in the application, which will allow contextual questions about places to be asked in a few seconds, from a simple button.

As part of this gradual modernization, Google is rolling out a new type of interface on Android. The idea is simple: avoid completely hiding the map when interacting with the app's menus. Instead, the different screens now open as sliding sheets, layered at the bottom of the screen. This design was already quietly introduced in the Explore tab in the summer of 2024. It begins rolling out today. generalize to other essential parts of the interface.

Google Maps generalizes sheet display on Android to keep the map visible

The “Discover” and “Contribute” tabs now adopt this sheet presentation. Once opened, these panels no longer occupy the entire screen. They can be slid up to display more elements, or reduced to occupy only the bottom. The map thus always remains visible, even in the background. This approach facilitates access to certain features such as reviews, photos or managing your Google Maps profile, without cutting off the display of the route.

The update, spotted on version 25.16.06 of the Android application, is aimed at a more fluid and less intrusive interface. All the familiar elements remain accessible, but they are now displayed more discreetly. This change improves usability, particularly in situations where the driver needs to quickly consult information without leaving the map view. A discreet but significant evolution, which confirms Google's desire to refocus its application on clarity, visual continuity, and immediacy.
