Zelda: the remake whose fans dream of still getting their eyes off

Well, this time it won't be the long-awaited remakes of The Legend of Zelda on Nintendo Switch 2. The console's long presentation did reveal something new to come for the license on said console, including a brand new game. Even if it's good news, the hearts of fans burn ardently for the return of certain opuses in a modernized version. Never mind, some have taken it upon themselves to do it!

A sublimated version of Zelda Ocarina of Time?

The Zelda saga is undoubtedly one of Nintendo's most popular. Its aura is such that it is the second to be entitled to an official adaptation for the big screen, after the Super Mario Bros. movie. It must also be said that it has a lot of experience. Next year, it will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary, yes! Therefore, it is not surprising that some fans are still very nostalgic. Some of the first installments are considered masterpieces, like Ocarina of Time.

Although rumors suggest the possibility of a remake for Wind Waker or Twilight Princesses, some are still calling for a new version of Zelda Ocarina of Time. The title already received its remake on Nintendo 3DS in 2011. But imagine what a new version on home consoles would look like, in the age of ray tracing and 4K?

That's what independent developer CryZENx is doing. For several years, it has been working on its own version of Zelda Ocarina of Time under Unreal Engine 5. This is not the first time we have witnessed an undertaking of this kind. In 2022, a certain RwanLink recreated Kakariko Village under the said Epic Games engine. But this time, we're getting a real demo.

Content creator Digital Dreams, well known for his hyper-realistic modded rides in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA 5, was able to try it out. It takes us into the world of Zelda Ocaraina of Time with 8K resolution. That's a real treat for our eyes! The transition isn't yet optimal, though. Likewise, the retro HUD pales in comparison to the realistic visuals. Nevertheless, we have to admit that the visuals are pretty darn appealing.

Between Link's cartoon character design and the realistic settings, it's a bit like Kena Bridge of Spirits meets Horizon Zero Dawn. The lighting also plays a big part in the credibility of this 'next-gen' Zelda. This proves once again the value of Unreal Engine 5. For freelance work at non-commercial aim, it is in any case a great project which continues to be refined.
