11 Google apps adopt this new menu

Google continues to work on the visual consistency of its services on Android. The account switching interface (the small, discreet menu in the top right of apps) now extends across the entire screen. This redesign already affects many of Google's flagship apps and improves both readability and access to settings.

A new interface for switching Google accounts

The main change comes from the move from a floating pop-up window to a full-screen view. This new presentation offers more space for each element and is directly inspired by the web experience deployed in 2023. First, we find the email address, followed by a larger avatar, a personalized greeting message ("Hello, [name]!"), and a central button for managing your Google account. Further down, the list of available accounts appears in a drop-down menu, allowing you to switch from one profile to another.

In practice, this redesign does not disrupt existing features, but it makes navigation easier, especially for users who juggle multiple accounts. The move to full screen also allows for better handling on smartphones with large screens.

Gradual adoption in major Google apps

In total, eleven new Google apps have already adopted this new interface on Android. It includes:

  • Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, for the office suite;
  • Google Maps (in sections like location sharing or settings), Keep, and Tasks for personal organization;
  • Google Translate, News, Home, and Wallet, with more discreet integrations in settings or help sections;
  • Gmail, which pioneered this redesign at the end of 2024, has however seen the deployment of its consumer version suspended.

With this interface change, Google wants to harmonize the user experience across all its applications, which is no luxury, especially on Android where the variety of devices often requires compromises on the display of certain menus. The new switcher also improves multi-account management, which will please those, like yours truly, who regularly switch between a work and personal Google account.
