6 years of Android updates on a low-cost smartphone? That’s the promise of this well-known brand

It's no longer necessary to invest in a smartphone costing over €1,000 to benefit from updates for many years. Manufacturers are starting to take software support for cheaper devices seriously.

6 years of Android updates on a low-cost smartphone? That’s the promise of this well-known brand

Buying an entry-level or mid-range smartphone allows you to save money in the short term. But they often become obsolete more quickly than premium phones, either due to hardware reasons (less durable materials, insufficient performance, etc.) or due to the discontinuation of software support.

At the beginning of May, we tested the Honor 400 Lite, a device for which the manufacturer promises 5 years of Android updates and security patches. This is clearly a very good point for a smartphone sold for less than 300 euros. And the brand will go further with the next models in the series.

6 years of updates for the Honor 400 and 400 Pro

As reported by Android Headlines, the soon-to-be-unveiled Honor 400 and Honor 400 Pro will benefit from six years of software support. To top it all off, they will also ship directly with Android 16. The former is a more entry-level device, while the latter can be considered mid-range. Receiving updates for six years on such devices is not common, even though Android manufacturers have greatly improved in this regard in recent years.

A few weeks ago, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Honor announced 7 years of Android updates and security patches for its most high-end smartphones, the Magic Pro and Magic V families. This decision allowed it to catch up with Google and Samsung.

By improving support for less expensive phones, Honor wants to satisfy users with a tighter budget. Google has made it easier for manufacturers to monitor software over Android versions, extending the lifespan of devices. Chipsets are also supported for a longer period. Qualcomm, for example, announced extended technical support for its Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC for 8 years.
