Five years after the release of Part 2, many are still calling for The Last of Us 3. Despite numerous statements not necessarily calling for a sequel, Naughty Dog is reportedly working on it, according to various leaks and rumors. Its main priority for the moment, however, is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. We do know, however, that Naughty Dog does have "another game in development," and its director Neil Druckmann mentioned it in an interview with Sacred Symbols+ on YouTube.
Naughty Dog wants The Last of Us 3 to impact its world
On several occasions, Neil Druckmann, director of Naughty Dog and the TLOU franchise, has played on fans' nerves regarding The Last of Us 3. One time, he says he's thinking about a story that would make sense for a third installment. Another time, he finally states that he hasn't yet found what it takes to justify a sequel to Ellie and Abby's ordeals in this fungal post-apocalyptic world. Speaking to Sacred Symbols+, the man opened up again when the YouTuber said: "I hope you come back with a sequel or a prequel." Neil Druckann had this to say on the subject: "As long as I'm in charge of the franchise, it's important to me that everything is of the best possible quality. I don't just want quantity. I want everything we do to be thoughtful." He draws a parallel with the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, believing he has found the best partners to do so. For now, however, TLOU 3 doesn't seem to be a priority for Naughty Dog. Neil Druckmann ends his statement thus: "If we were to return to the franchise, I want to make sure we tell a story worthy of it. I love this world and these characters. Given the right opportunity, the right idea, I would happily return to it." So, this "other game in development" at Naughty Dog would not, a priori, be The Last of Us 3, despite various signs to the contrary. But perhaps the studio director is still playing with words to sow doubt among fans. Whatever other game is in the pipeline, we're not likely to see it for a long time, as Naughty Dog's priority for the moment is Intergalactic, which itself isn't expected to be released for a few more years.
