Apple reportedly taps Claude d'Anthropic to develop its development tools

After remaining very discreet in the field of artificial intelligence, Apple has been making a number of announcements about AI for almost a year now. Indeed, it was only last June that Apple spoke on the subject for the first time, by mentioning the Apple Intelligence project.

For several months now, Apple has communicated several times on this subject, when other companies like Google are not announcing potential partnerships with Gemini.

But if Apple had until now shared announcements that were more relevant to the general public, the company could be embarking on a new project that would challenge the fundamentals of its development...

A new "vibe coding" project with Anthropic?

In an article by Mark Gurman published on May 2nd on Bloomberg, we learned that Apple is about to sign a unprecedented partnership with Anthropic, one of OpenAI's main competitors with its chatbot Claude.

However, contrary to what one might imagine, Apple does not plan to make a new AI available in Siri with Anthropic, even if Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president, had suggested it in the past.

Instead, the two companies could work together on a "vibe coding" project, which consists of developing using AI-powered code generation. As an increasingly popular development method, Apple could take advantage of this to completely change the way its developers work...

An AI that could be integrated into Xcode

Among the tools that have made Apple successful in recent years, it is impossible not to mention its integrated development environment (IDE) with Xcode. This is the environment that allows developers to create apps for iOS, macOS, and other Apple operating systems like watchOS and tvOS. With the integration of Anthropic's Sonnet model into Xcode, the company's most popular and user-friendly model, Apple could greatly facilitate app development. However, neither Apple nor Anthropic has yet confirmed or denied this partnership. Furthermore, it is possible that Sonnet's integration into Xcode will not be publicly available. This is not the first time that Apple has integrated artificial intelligence into its development tools for internal use. In June 2024, the company had already made headlines by announcing Swift Assist, an AI tool that includes suggestions for developers. However, it is still not available to the general public, and Apple has not given a release date.
