Electric cars in France: Tesla has just left the top 10

In April 2025, the Renault R5 E-Tech won the award for best-selling electric car in France, with a total of 2,267 units sold. In second place was a family SUV, also from Renault, the Scénic E-Tech, with 1,463 units. The podium was completed, according to NGC-Data, by a certain Citroën ë-C3, which has just received a new entry-level version for less than 20,000 euros.

On this podium, one notable absentee: Tesla. The American manufacturer failed to place its Model 3 or its all-new Model Y. Looking at the more complete top 10, its name still does not appear. The Peugeot e-208, e-2008, e-3008, Renault Mégane E-Tech, Volkswagen ID.3, BMW iX1, and other Kia EV3s have taken the lead over Elon Musk's brand. An unprecedented absence, while Tesla has been on this list for several years already.

If we look at the ranking of the 10 best-selling models over the last four months, we find the Model Y in fifth place. The American electric SUV is still among the best-selling models thanks to its strong performance last January, which allowed it to accumulate 5,237 sales over the period. The first month of the year was still a tipping point.

For other brands, April was not the most disruptive month, with growth of 2.78% to 25,542 electric cars sold in France, compared to 24,850 units in April 2024.

Tesla has been sinking since January

Tesla's troubles began in January, when the manufacturer sold only 7,517 units of its electric cars in the European Union, a far cry from the more than 15,000 units a year earlier. In France, sales fell by 63% during the month. In China, the situation in February added fuel to the fire, with a 49% drop compared to the previous year.

In eleventh place in April, the Model Y suffered the biggest variation in the entire ranking. Note that it was still in second place in March despite the fact that Tesla was already experiencing the wave of unpopularity that is weighing on its sales today. During the month of March in France, its sales fell by 36.83%.
