Half-Life 3: Valve's next game is almost finished, and we may know when it will arrive

Twenty years after Half-Life 2, fans thought the legendary sequel was buried... but a tipster claims that Valve is finally done playing hide-and-seek. Get your crowbars ready, Gordon Freeman's return is getting closer (maybe).

Half-Life 3: Valve's next game is almost finished, and we may know when it will arrive

The urban legend of video games could finally become reality. According to Tyler McVicker, a regular source of Valve leaks, Half-Life 3 is no longer a fantasy: the game will be fully playable, from the first scene to the last. An official announcement is even planned for this summer, for a release in late 2025.

These revelations are based on testimonies from playtesters and clues gleaned from updates to Deadlock and Dota 2, where the code "HLX," supposedly the internal name of the project, appears regularly. A Valve concept artist even revealed during a podcast that he participated in the development. These are all signs that rekindle fans' hopes, despite the lack of official confirmation.

A "complete" game, but not as we imagined

According to McVicker, Half-Life 3 will not be a VR title, unlike Alyx. The gameplay would rely on procedural generation inspired by the "Director" of Left 4 Dead 2, dynamically adjusting the location of enemies, objects, or interactions, without touching the main story, which would remain scripted. An approach that differs from past rumors suggesting a fully procedural game, abandoned in 2014 due to the limitations of the Source 2 engine.

Another intriguing detail: the story could cross paths with the Portal universe, with a possible appearance by Chell. Erik Wolpaw, the long-time screenwriter, reportedly aims to develop Portal 3 as soon as Half-Life 3 is finalized. But Valve remains silent, leaving doubts about this information.

The fact remains that, for the first time, a complete version of the game does indeed exist. McVicker insists: no previous project had gone this far. The teams are now refining the optimization and technical details. Enough to fuel theories... and memes, as long as Gabe Newell doesn't break his silence. So be patient: next summer could either bury the myth or give birth to a new era for Gordon Freeman. Especially since with the postponement of GTA 6 just announced by Rockstar, Valve now has the field clear for the end of 2025.
