As you probably know, HBO is currently developing the Harry Potter series, which will be a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling's novels, which will be turned into a television series. While the initial casting calls have generated a lot of buzz, there's also the writer's involvement in the production following her comments against transgender people. The channel has just spoken out to reassure fans.
HBO's Harry Potter series is causing a lot of talk
While fans are waiting to find out what the new adaptation of the Harry Potter saga developed by HBO will bring together, the project is generating a lot of buzz. It must be said that when part of the new cast was announced, many fans reacted to the choice of certain actors. Particularly for the one who will take over the role of Severus Snape, played in the cinema by Alan Rickman and replaced by Paapa Essiedu for the TV series.
And that's not the only controversy that has arisen. Some fans were up in arms when they learned that the British novelist, who wrote the novels, would be involved in the Harry Potter series project.
HBO reassures fans about J.K. Rowling's involvement
For several years, J.K. Rowling has caused controversy because of her comments about the transgender community. Recently, she drew reactions from anonymous internet users and TV stars after welcoming a Supreme Court decision that ruled on the legal definition of a woman. The controversial statements made by the young wizard's mother have created tension between her and the main actors in the films.
So, on HBO's side, the fact that they proposed the author to get involved in the Harry Potter series is a source of concern. Last November, HBO's chief programming officer, Casey Bloys, said that Rowling was heavily involved in the selection of the writer and director, but that her comments about transgender status "did not affect casting or the hiring of writers or production staff."
Today, again through Bloys, HBO attempted to reassure fans again. In a recent interview, he assured that the Harry Potter series will focus on the magic of the original story and not on the personal opinions of its author:
The decision to collaborate with J.K. Rowling is not new to us. We have been in the business for 25 years. It is clear that these are her personal opinions. She has a right to them. Harry Potter is not secretly influenced by anything.
In a statement, the network reiterated that Rowling had the right to express her opinions and that HBO was focusing on developing the series "which can only benefit from her participation".
Filming on the series is scheduled to begin this summer and Season 1 of Harry Potter is expected in 2027.
