All Marvel fans are eager to discover the next installment of the Avengers adventures in cinemas with Avengers: Doomsday which will be the opportunity to see Robert Downey Jr. return to the MCU. Except that Disney has just made an announcement that may very well displease them: the postponement of many release dates.
Marvel Studios makes the announcement that fans were dreading
In July 2024, Marvel Studios revealed the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU with the announcement of a new Avengers film titled Doomsday and a sequel Avengers: Secret Wars. For both projects, the Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe, will be behind the camera. The actor who played Tony Stark will swap his Iron Man suit for that of Doctor Doom, who will be the new big villain, replacing Jonathan Majors, who was fired from the studio following his legal troubles.
While fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are eager to see these two productions on the big screen, they'll have to be more patient than expected. And for good reason: Disney has just updated its Marvel movie release schedule tonight.
While Avengers: Doomsday was scheduled for theatrical release on May 1, 2026 in the USA (April 30 in France), it has been postponed to December 18, 2026 and December 16 in France. For Avengers: Secret Wars, initially scheduled for May 7, 2027 across the Atlantic (May 5, 2027 in France), its release is now set for December 17, 2027 and therefore December 15 in France.
This is only a few months behind Marvel Studios' plans. Production began filming Doomsday last month in England. Moreover, several leaks have allowed us to have a glimpse of the film set, such as a huge Sentinel in a pitiful state on the ground, or even a TikToker who allegedly filmed himself infiltrating a film studio.
December 2026, a busy month for moviegoers
Note that with the new release date of Avengers: Doomsday set for December 18, 2026 (in the USA and the 15th in France), the Marvel feature film will be released on the same day as Dune: Messiah and the sixth installment in the franchise Ice Age. December 2026 will be a busy month for moviegoers, as Jumanji 4 will be released in French theaters on December 9, and Shrek 5 is expected in American theaters on December 23. Finally, it's worth noting that the new Marvel schedule will impact various titles that have yet to be announced, as reported by Variety. Let's point out that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will finally be released before Doomsday, as its release is still set for July 29, 2026, with filming scheduled to begin this summer.
The next Marvel film to be released in theaters will be Fantastic Four: The Beginning on July 23 to kick off Phase 6 of the MCU.
