While fans of post-apocalyptic science fiction are passionately following the second season of The Last of Us, Netflix has just launched its new series, which competes directly with the HBO show. We tell you everything!
Netflix's response to The Last of Us
We've already said in our columns: 2025 is an important year for fans of post-apocalyptic science fiction. While we are currently following season 2 of The Last of Us, HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's cult franchise, other big releases are eagerly awaited by fans of the genre. We are thinking in particular of the film 28 Years Later by Danny Boyle - which will mark the return of the British filmmaker and English screenwriter Alex Garland to the franchise - and the video game Death Stranding 2: On the Beach by Hideo Kojima. As a reminder, these two big releases are scheduled for June 2025.
On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Netflix added on its platform the Argentinian series The Eternaut, taken from the cult comic book L'Eternaute by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López; published in the 1950s. During an alien invasion, the population of Buenos Aires is partly exterminated because of a fatal snowfall sent by the invaders. A group of friends manages to escape and must organize themselves to survive. Developed by Bruno Stagnaro, this series is enjoying some success on Netflix; It is currently the third most-watched series of the moment. Ahead of it, in first place on the podium, is the mini-series Asterix & Obelix: The Battle of the Chiefs, written and directed by Alain Chabat and released on the same day. (The series is received with rave reviews from the public.)
However, the ambitions are extremely clear. While HBO is enjoying immense success with The Last of Us, Amazon Prime Video has also received very positive feedback from its adaptation of the video game license Fallout. From there to seeing a renewed interest in the post-apocalyptic, there is only one step! While obviously, L'Èternaute does not have the power of attraction of The Last of Us or Fallout in the eyes of the European public, the series has aroused rather very positive reviews from the English and French-speaking press, which praised the construction of the characters, the environment and the themes addressed, but mainly regretted its very slow pace.
Nevertheless, in the context of a revival of post-apocalyptic science fiction, Netflix unveils a real competitor to the stranglehold of the genre by HBO and Amazon Prime Video. This competition on the post-apo genre reminds us how much the big Hollywood companies organize themselves to obtain leadership for each genre - this is what we have observed with fantasy, following the triumph of Game of Thrones. Netflix has already produced several original contents aimed at post-apo fans, such as the series Snowpiercer and Sweet Tooth or the film Bird Box. And you, what do you think?
