If you're using an older Amazon Fire TV and used to watching Netflix on it, take advantage of this, because it won't last much longer. Netflix just emailed some of its subscribers that it will stop supporting the first-generation Amazon Fire TV. These devices are nearly a decade old.
Netflix is discontinuing the first-generation Fire TV
Starting June 3, 2025, three older Amazon Fire TV models will be retired by Netflix. The 2014 Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, as well as the 2016 Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote, will no longer be able to run the Netflix app. A decision made by the streaming service due to the fact that these devices, which Amazon has stopped updating, do not support the most recent audio and video codecs used by Netflix.
The platform has not given a concrete explanation on this subject, but it seems very likely that the end of support for these devices is due to their incompatibility with the codecs it uses. This is the case, for example, with the AV1 codec, which is now widely used to offer optimal image quality, particularly for users with a Premium subscription.
You will have to buy a new Fire TV to continue watching Netflix
For owners of the affected Fire TV models, there will be no other choice but to scrap their device and purchase a more recent Fire TV model. A few months ago, the e-commerce giant expanded its range of streaming devices. Amazon launched its new Fire TV Stick HD, a model designed by Amazon to replace its older Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite.
This new entry-level model maintains a maximum resolution of 1080p and features a faster Quad-Core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz, as well as compatibility with HDR and ARC. The bare minimum to fully enjoy a smooth streaming experience on older generation TVs.
