Are Square Enix and PlatinumGames really working on NieR 3 in complete secrecy? It's true that there haven't been any reveals of a new game yet, but the evidence seems to be mounting. Recently, a strange teaser on the franchise's 15th anniversary page led fans to believe that an announcement could be coming soon. And this isn't about to stop after the confirmation of a project currently in development by the Automata team.
Further proof for NieR 3?
During his 2025 wishes, PlatinumGames producer Yosuke Saito hinted that there might be some things to say about the future of the franchise and therefore potentially NieR 3. "2025 will be a pivotal year because it marks the 15th anniversary of the NieR series, so I'd like to do something on that occasion. What should we do... maybe something related to the next game, or developments related to that... I've heard the fans' expectations." Yoko Taro even posted a mysterious image with the word 2025 on it.
So NieR 3 will be announced soon? The surprise seems to be confirmed after an interview published in Famitsu magazine. Producer Yosuke Saito has stated that "nothing has changed" regarding the new, undisclosed project by Yoko Taro, Keiichi Okabe, and Takahisa Taura. As a reminder, they are the director, composer, and one of the designers of NieR Automata, respectively.
Of course, the three men could be working on something other than NieR 3, but given previous statements and clues, it would be more surprising if it weren't for that. Yosuke Saito has stated that "nothing has changed" because of the departures of key members of PlatinumGames. Among these people is Takahisa Taura, who directed Astral Chain and created his own studio, Eel Game. It's unclear what the first game from this structure will be, but Taura-san has not stopped his ongoing collaboration with his NieR Automata comrades. If there really is a NieR 3 in the works, we should know more later this year.
