Earlier this year, we learned that the PlayStation Studios family welcomed a new member to its ranks: Dark Outlaw Games. Founded by Jason Blundell, who is best known for his work on the legendary Zombies mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops, this new studio is now working on its first project, which is set to release on PS6. A project about which we know absolutely nothing at the moment, but which is likely to attract the wrath of Internet users if we are to believe one of the recruitment offers.
Generative AI is coming to PlayStation Studios
Available on the official PlayStation page, it tells us that the studio is currently looking for a Senior Concept Artist, whose role will be "essential in the definition and conceptualization of the visual language" of their future projects, which should arrive on PS6. "The ideal candidate has solid experience in the different aspects of concept art, including environments, characters and accessories, and will have to thrive in both an independent and collaborative setting.". So far, nothing unusual.
But then comes the mention that has the gift of causing controversy for the time being: that of generative AI. Because this is what risks making some people tick. "The ideal candidate is proactive, has strong skills in digital illustration, 3D modeling, character design, graphic design, experience with generative AI tools and is passionate about game creation" also indicates the PlayStation announcement. And unfortunately, this is not the only time that generative AI is mentioned.
A little further down, in the list of responsibilities related to the position, we can see that the Senior Concept Artist for this game, which should be expected on PS6, will be required to "refine and refine 2D artworks created by both humans and generative AI tools", which is likely to make some people grind their teeth even more. But probably not as much as the list of required qualifications, in which "advanced expertise in the use of generative AI tools such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, ChatGPT or similar platforms" is requested by PlayStation Studio.
A future under AI for the PS6?
Of course, Dark Outlaw Games would not be the first nor the last to use this type of tool, which is increasingly becoming part of the video game industry. However, this naturally raises questions about the future of game creation at PlayStation, whether on PS5 or PS6. Especially at a time when another of the company's studios, Bungie, has just been criticized for stealing an artist's work for Marathon, its new multiplayer FPS expected on September 23rd. Especially since PlayStation had already caused controversy earlier in the year after the release of a video of Aloy entirely generated by AI.
Suffice to say that in such a context, the work produced by Dark Outlaw Games risks being scrutinized by Internet users. That being said, we probably still have a few years to go before we see the fruits of the studio's labors emerge. Thanks to this job offer, however, we have confirmation that the latter is working on a new license, described as "the next revolutionary AAA [...], the genre that will truly stand out from the others". See you on PS6, then, unless there's a surprise or a possible cross-generation release.
