For the past few days, rumors surrounding Resident Evil 9 have resurfaced. After Nate the Hate, this time it's a source well-known to fans of the series who is speaking out, Dusk Golem, aka AestheticGamer. In a series of posts on X (ex-Twitter), the insider shared several juicy details about the behind-the-scenes development. And what he reveals is surprising, to say the least.
A very different Resident Evil 9 from the start
According to him, development on Resident Evil 9 began as early as 2017. At that time, Capcom still doubted the success of Resident Evil 7, whose launch sales were considered disappointing. The result? The publisher would have liked to take another direction.
The first version of RE9 was therefore conceived as a radically different game. A multiplayer open world, far from classic survival horror. The game was to feature Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine, on a fictional island inspired by Singapore. Yes, you read that right. But this project didn't last.
Complete reboot in 2021
Also according to Dusk Golem, this first version of Resident Evil 9 has been canceled. Capcom reportedly restarted development from scratch in 2021, shortly after the release of Resident Evil Village. Since then, RE9 has reportedly taken a direction closer to what fans expected. Leon would still be at the heart of the story, but there is no indication that Jill is still present. This news has caused a stir in the community, with many regretting that this cult character has once again been left out.
At the same time, the insider also confirmed the cancellation of Revelations 3. The game, centered on Rebecca Chambers, was originally intended for the Nintendo Switch. But it was abandoned in 2022. A disappointment for those who were hoping for a return of the Revelations saga, appreciated for its more modest and experimental atmosphere.
Another point raised, contrary to rumors, a remake of the very first Resident Evil was not in development in 2023. On the other hand, a return of Resident Evil Zero or Code Veronica would be considered, even if this information is a little dated.
A direct reaction within the fan community
Unsurprisingly, fans reacted strongly to this Resident Evil 9 leak. Many say they are relieved that Capcom avoided the trap of open-world multiplayer. Others, on the other hand, deplore the cancellation of promising projects, or the absence of cult characters like Jill or Rebecca.
