The second season of Squid Game was released on Netflix in December 2024, more than three years after the hit series debuted on the platform. It was the opportunity to see Lee Jung-jae again as Gi-hun and, of course, a host of particularly cruel games.
Viewers won't have to wait several years to discover the third and final season of Squid Game. It will be available on Netflix starting June 27. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show's creator, announced that new, more merciless games than ever will enliven the show's final episodes.
Even more sadistic games in season 3 of Squid Game
Hwang Dong-hyu, creator of Squid Game, spoke at length about the third season of the series in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The opportunity to learn that the characters will be put to the test by the new games.
"In the case of Season 3, I wanted to introduce games that could really show the depths of humanity, because the series itself is reaching its climax. I wanted very intense games to bring out the lowest aspects of human nature," Hwang explained to Entertainment Weekly.
This should delight viewers. The difficult choices faced by the game's participants and the psychological devices used are a large part of the spice of the series. Also, if you have a fear of heights, this Season 3 should particularly challenge you. Hwang Dong-hyu explains that the games in the second season didn't play enough on the fear of heights. The creator has corrected the situation for the next episodes of Squid Game.
The Korean also addresses the fate of important characters, obviously without spoiling future events. While the second season focused on how Gi-hun tried to end the game, this final season is instead focused on how the participants try to "maintain their humanity amidst this intense competition in this capitalist era."
What about the baby we hear in the trailer for season 3 of Squid Game? "This baby plays a very important role in season 3, not only for Jun-hee, but also for the fate of everyone inside. You can expect that," says Hwang Dong-hyu. Tune in on June 27 on Netflix to find out.
